Minutes of PCC Meeting of 22nd January 2017

St Michael and All Angels, Headingley

Minutes of the Parochial Church Council Meeting held on 22 January 2017

Present: Revd Tony Whatmough (chair); Rebecca Crowson; Alan Daines; Ann Dudzinski; Malcolm Heath; Tom Herbert; Felicity King; Alan Parker (item 6)

Apologies: Ben Ellis; Jane Ferguson; Joan Penter; Deryck Piper; Luke Verrall

West End of Church: AD had registered on the online Faculty Application system. Initiating grant applications would require a Faculty Application and costings. Next steps would be considered by Fabric Committee.

Annual Review of Safeguarding Policy: A meeting had been held on 21 January. The existing policy was fit for purpose, though some terminological updates were desirable. Diocesan guidance is currently incomplete, pending the publication of the new national policy. A revised parish policy and associated documents would be brought to the next meeting of PCC.

Appointment of Director of Music: The advert was ready to launch, with a closing date for applications on 6 April.

Shire Oak School: The carol service in church had done well. The School had also participated in the turning on of Headingley Christmas lights. The Shire Oak service would be on 5 February. The reception class is oversubscribed.

Team Rector’s comments:

Audio-visual installations: The plan for a permanent AV installation is currently stalled, with the proposed contactors being unresponsive. Alternatives are being investigated. One radio mike has failed; though a repair is thought to be possible, a more comprehensive overhaul of amplification seems appropriate. This would be considered by Fabric Committee.

Curate: Angela Birkin was to be ordained on 1 July, and officially welcomed to St Michael’s on 2 July..

Charity of the Season: It was agreed that the next nominated charity should be the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for Syria. An adoption charity would be considered for Lent.

Lent Course: There will be a Lent course, possible on the five marks of mission.

Treasurer’s Report: Year end balances were £55.5k (main account) and £6.1 (Parish Hall account).

The Yorkshire Bank Headingley branch will close on 11 May. Deposits can be made at the Post Office, if it remains open; otherwise, alternative local banking facilities may need to be considered.

The Parish Share for the year would be £47.7k. This was a 15% increase, the maximum possible under the new diocesan system for share allocation.

Fabric Report: Further LED ‘warm white’ floodlights had been fitted, and additional lighting replacements were planned.

New stage lighting is being installed in the Parish Hall.

The low iron fence around the Parish Hall garden has been damaged, probably by a car. A quote is being sought for the repair.

The corner of the Parish Hall roof overhanging the pavement on St Michael’s Lane had been badly damaged, probably by a high vehicle mounting the pavement. Repairs are in hand.
