St Michael’s and All Angels’, Headingley

Minutes of the Annual Parochial Church Meeting held on Sunday 22nd April 2012, at 11.45am in the Parish Hall

1. Revd Steve Smith (Area Dean) chaired the meeting.

2. Apologies: Apologies were received from: Pippa Clayton; Mary Duffty; Jane Ferguson; Dorothy Griffiths; Geoffrey Marshall; Margaret Kingston; Edward Stageman; Peggy Stageman; Elizabeth Wren.

3. Minutes of the previous Annual Meeting, Sunday 10th April 2010: The minutes of the meeting had been circulated in advance. They were taken as read, confirmed as a true record subject to three minor corrections, and signed. There were no matters arising.

4. Appointment of Sidespeople: The following appointments were made: Angela Appleyard; David Appleyard; Brian Carding; Jane Ferguson; Felicity King; Janet Lewis; Geoffrey Marshall; Peter Rose; Elaine Sykes-Austin; Pat Sykes-Austin; Peter Turnbull; Pat Whittington. Margaret Gibson and Susan Youell indicated their continuing willingness to act as reserves.

Members of the congregation interested in joining the team were encouraged to speak to the Churchwardens. Steve Smith observed that such teams would play an increasingly important role in churches in future.

5. Election of Parochial Church Council: There were four vacancies for three years, and one for one year. The following six nominations had been received:

- Brian Carding (proposed by Felicity King, seconded by Deryck Piper);
- Glynis Dickson (proposed by Felicity King, seconded by Jane Ferguson);
- Malcolm Heath (proposed by Rebecca Crowson, seconded by Felicity King);
- Alan Parker (proposed by Ann Dudzinksi, seconded by Deryck Piper);
- Deryck Piper (proposed by Brian Carding, seconded by Janet Lewis);
- Alex Wheatley (proposed by Luke Verrall, seconded by Ben Ellis).

Pat Whittington and Felicity King were appointed as tellers. After a vote, the following were declared elected to PCC for periods determined by the drawing of lots: Glynis Dickson (3 years); Malcolm Heath (3 years); Alan Parker (3 years); Deryck Piper (1 year); Alex Wheatley (3 years).

Steve Smith expressed thanks to all those who had allowed their names to be put forward.

6. Electoral Roll Report: There were 103 members in 2011, of whom 44 were resident and 59 non-resident in the parish.

Margery Briggs was thanked for her long service as electoral roll officer. Her successor would be appointed at the first meeting of the new PCC.

7. Annual Report of the Parochial Church Council: The report had been circulated previously, and was received as read.

An opinion was expressed from the floor that PCC’s decision not to proceed with the New Edge Telecommunications proposal to install a mobile telephone mast in the tower was regrettable, given the state of the church’s finances.

8. Treasurer’s Annual Report and Financial Statement: The report and financial statement had been circulated previously.

Steve Smith observed that many churches were, like St Michael’s, running at a deficit. The church (in general) would need to think about how they could operate sustainably in current and future circumstances. A challenging outlook demanded a creative and committed response.

Kevin Ward reminded the meeting that it was important to keep mission support on the parish’s agenda, to meet obligations towards the wider needs of the Christian church.

9. Churchwardens’ report on the Fabric, Goods and Ornaments of the Church: The report had been circulated previously, and was received as read. Ann Dudzinksi formally presented the Terrier, Inventory and Log Book, duly signed, to the meeting.

It was noted that the increase in maintenance costs in 2011 was due to work on the roof, the organ, and lighting (wiring and fittings).

10. Headingley Deanery Synod: A report had been circulated with the PCC report, and was received as read.

11. Churchwarden’s remarks: Ann Dudzinski expressed her thanks to Margery Briggs, Susan Penter and Susan Youell for their service as electoral roll officer, PCC secretary and as treasurer respectively; to the former churchwardens (Pat Whittington, David Appleyard, Deryck Piper, Malcolm Heath) for their ongoing support to the Churchwardens; to the clergy team (David Peat, Kevin Ward and Clive Barrett; Alan Batchelor, Phil Chilvers, Adam Clayton and David Randolph Horn, who helped on a regular basis; Jan Kramer and Brian Turnbull the reader as Lay Readers); to Ben Ellis, who had returned to his role as verger and cleaner having made a good recovery from his injuries, and to Stacey Ayre, for her service as acting verger. She thanked those who were involved in services (the choir, choir-master and organists; the flower team; acolytes; crucifers; sacristans; intercessors; eucharistic administrators; readers; and sidespeople); those who worked in administrative roles (Malcolm Heath, as minutes secretary; Moyra Davis, for the pew leaflets and her help in the office; Pat and Elaine Sykes-Austin, as stewardship recorders; Janet and Cefin Lewis, for their running of the Parish Hall); those who contributed to the church’s social activities (the coffee teams, and those involved in the Student and 18+ group, the Muir Court lunch-club and the friendship group); those involved in maintaining the fabric of the church (especially Ben Ellis; David Appleyard; and the brass and silver cleaners); those who worked with external bodies, including Churches Together in Headingley and the Deanery Synod. She thanked all the members of PCC, and welcomed the two newly elected members of PCC, Alex Wheatley and Glynis Dickson. She thanked the deputy churchwardens, and she gave especial thanks to Rebecca Crowson, her co-Churchwarden.

She also expressed her thanks to Steve Smith for chairing the meeting, and for all the help he had given as Area Dean.

Appreciation was expressed from the floor for the Stage Group, for the panto and other entertainments.

12. The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
